Position Description:
The University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has an opening for a postdoctoral research position in physical inorganic/ organometallic chemistry with a possible teaching component. This is a one-year appointment, renewable on satisfactory job performance and the availability of funds. The position is available August 1, 2012.

Essential and Preferred Qualifications:

Essential: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in inorganic, physical, or organic chemistry. The position requires proficiency in conducting multi-step inorganic/organometallic/organic syntheses at anaerobic, dry, and low-temperature conditions. Applicants must have a good knowledge of NMR (including 2D and VT), UV-vis, and mass-spectrometry methods. Finally, applicants must demonstrate their ability to work independently and as a part of the team, supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and have good written and oral English communication skills.

Preferred: Preferred applicants will have some experience in synthesis and characterization of porphyrins, phthalocyanines, and their analogues. Applicants with good knowledge of chemistry of ferrocenes and related compounds as well as MCD, EPR, electrochemical, and spectroelectrochemical methods are preferred. Applicants who are the primary author of three or more peer-reviewed research publications are also preferred.

Description of Duties:
Duties will include preparation and characterization of new porphyrins and related compounds with organometallic substituents. The successful applicant will be responsible for organizing results, supervising undergraduate and graduate students, and writing reports in the form of research publications. Duties may also include teaching courses in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry as assigned.
