EURAChEM WoRkShoP on Validation /Traceability..., 21-22 May, Berlin

Eurachem issued the guide on method validation “The Fitness for Purpose of Analytical Methods.
A Laboratory Guide to Method Validation and Related Topics” in 1998, and in 2003 guidance on “Traceability
in Chemical Measurement” was published. Lately the 3rd version of “Quantifying Uncertainty in Analytical
Measurement” is about to be issued.

This workshop will focus on the relationship between method validation, traceability and measurement
uncertainty in various fields of quantitative analytical measurements.
The workshop will
Review the development in these three areas
Share ideas on the needs for guidance on method validation with focus on the link betweeen the
three elements
Discuss the criteria for methods – and the results they produce – being fit for purpose
Workshop content
The workshop will deal mainly with Method Validation issues on day one and Measurement Uncertainty
and Traceability on day 2. Both days it will show how all the components are interrelated
Topics to be covered include

Day 1
Method Validation
The linkage between method validation, traceability and measurement uncertainty
What has happened in the area of analytical method performance since the issue of the
“Fitness for Purpose” Guide in 1998?
Current regulatory requirements
Translating customers’ needs to method validation requirements – the link to performance criteria
Challenges of performing appropriate Method Validation
How can the established procedures for method validation, estimation of MU and securing
traceability be applied to the “modern” heavily instrumented and automated methods?
Challenges for validation of automated and instrumented methods (“Black Boxes”)
Validation of test kits
Securing validity of methods for the matrices and content levels identified in the scope of the
method
From method validation to internal QC

Day 2
Measurement Uncertainty
The new Eurachem Guide for Measurement Uncertainty - a summary of structure and changes
Using method validation and performance data for estimating measurement uncertainty.
Verifying measurement uncertainty estimates
New approaches to Measurement Uncertainty estimation (numerical methods, Monte Carlo simulation etc.)
Traceability
Current Eurachem guidance on Metrological Traceability
Practical ways of establishing traceability of Analytical Results
Traceability to a unit, a material or a method?
Measurement uncertainty and the traceability chain

The workshop will provide ample opportunity to discuss the above topics in interactive presentation
and discussion (‘breakout’) sessions as well as in the plenary lectures. Participants may additionally
present and discuss posters in arranged poster sessions.

This event will be followed up by another event in the autumn of 2012 focusing on the need for currently securing that the basis
established above is still valid – e.g. by checking of the laboratory’s performance in terms of internal control.}
Poster presentat ions
The Scientific Committee invites participants to present posters on subjects related to the theme of this
workshop.
Please use the registration form for submitting the proposed poster title and provide an abstract
(1 page, pdf format) by 31 March 2012 at the latest.
Registration forms should be sent to eurolab-d@bam.de and abstracts to lps@labqa.dk.
As only a limited number of posters will be allowed (30), the Scientific Committee will evaluate the delivered
abstracts for a selection of the posters to be presented at the workshop.
